Thanks to the voters who helped to select the design of a beautiful piece of art which could eventually become part of Browns Bay’s landscape. The Whale Tales 2022 art trail will showcase 100 uniquely designed whale tail sculptures throughout Auckland for 10 weeks. This event is run by WWF-New Zealand, in partnership with Wild at Art and ATEED. Each whale tail is being sponsored by businesses and organisations and, at the close of the event, will be auctioned off to raise funds for WWF-NZ.

Browns Bay Business Association (BBBA) is sponsoring a whale tail to be exhibited locally. They had a competition to find a design created in the theme of ‘Destination Browns Bay’.  Says Kim Murdoch, Town Centre Manager “we were looking for a design that epitomises what our town represents, and something that our community will be proud of.” Four designs that filled the brief in diverse ways were selected to go to public vote. The winning design is by professional local artist Jane Mason, entitled Where You Belong – Ocean Series.  Jane won $500 and a contract with WWF-NZ to produce a sculpture out of her stunning design.

BBBA hopes to purchase Jane’s creation to keep as a permanent art piece for the community to continue enjoying.

The Auckland-wide art trail takes place from 24 January to 18 April 2022.
